click on format, go to options, click on the system tab and there should be a start-up drop down box. change that to show dialog box.

abmeador

What do you want it to open?
The past dwg?
No dwg at all?
Or a blank dwg off of your template?

nmulder34

i'm running 2008 and not finding this option under the system tab.

kevinaldo

just type startup and choose 1

Can't be done and. . . . WHY would you want to do that anyways??!?

Lordhalos

Well every time i open ACAD i close drawing1 then open the drawing i intended to work on.

BHashman

Have you tried ignoring the drawing and opening the drawing you want to work on?

what happens? does the other drawing stay open if you have done nothing to it?

abmeador

If you open Acad/ABS/ADT, dwg1 is always there.
If you ignore it and open a new dwg that dwg1 remains open.
I agree, it gets kind of annoying that 90% of the time you have to close it out b/c you are wanting to work on other things.

BHashman

Hmmm... I don't have that pattern. Instead the default DWG closes and goes away automagically.

If I zoom or do anything in the default DWG then it DOES stay open.

abmeador

How'd you get that to work BHashman?
I'd really like to know! :slightly_smiling_face:

When you start the session and drawing 1 appears if you don't do anything besides go to file > open and choose the dwg you want open, then drawing 1 will disappear and you will be left with only the dwg you wanted open.

When you start the session and drawing 1 appears, if you zoom, pan, anything and then go to file > open and choose the dwg, both of them will be open.

My dwg1 is still there. (ABS 07)

I can go to file/open and open a dwg, or i can go to file and choose a previously opened dwg (from the bottom list) and it still keeps dwg1 open. This is even though I did not scroll, zoom, touch anything in dwg1 nor touching any of the palettes.

AvatMEP1

Thats very strange. I have back to 06 on my machine and I have the same behavior there as well. Dwg 1 will automatically close. There may be a system variable that controls it but I honestly don't know it off the top.

dtiemeyer

Have we bypassed the obvious...

Just double-click on the DWG file through Windows Explorer and AutoCAD will open directly to it *without* opening drawing 1.

my 2 cents: autocad is useless in 0 doc state, get used to closing drawing 1

D-

My other CAD is a Cadillac and I like to Revit to the Max!

AvatMEP1

A lot of people don't use that method or don't like it.

Plus if the dwg is utilizing project navigator if you double click to open thru explorer you mess up the project.

goetzylla

Yes, it can be done..see post above.

Type "Startup" on command line and fill in #1.

Now an opening dialog starts up when opening AutoCad and no "drawing 1" file is opened.

The reason why this is preferable is that no additional drawing is open in the background and it doen't need to closed when shutting down the program.

This was a valid request by the person who posted the thread....no need to dismiss it with a Capital letters WHY questions.....

Kemantro

Simple!!!

Just type STARTUP and type 2 (works in my AutoCAD 2012)

now new AutoCAD sessions start much more fast without a 'Drawing1' file.

BC-JChandler

Thank you Kemantronik! STARTUP = 2 is the way to go.
